I graduated from Harbor Springs High School in 2009 and currently am attending North Central Michigan College. As a kid I found reality very boring, and so my imagination set me up for disappointment early in life. I would spend hours trying my hardest to wish things like magic and unicorns into existence. It was only natural that I came to love books. Growing up in Harbor Springs, I visited McLean and Eakin often and was secretly jealous of its employees. This fall I got the chance join the team. Lucky for me, I didn’t have to wish too hard.

Set in the future, undesirable citizens of earth are transported to serve out jail sentences on the moon. However, earth authorities failed to factor in a low gravity environment. Due to irreversible physiological changes, those on the moon can never return to earth. Over time the moon colonies become more and more like a separate country and soon want their own freedom. However, the plot isn’t the central part of this book because Robert does an incredibly thorough, intelligent and realistic job at creating the details of a revolution. He has characters discuss everything from economics to sociology to culture to physics, mathematics, computer science, philosophies, politics, medicine, finance and much more. It’s thrilling how realistic Robert’s world seems. If you consider yourself a true fan of science fiction, read this book. If you aren’t a fan, still read this book.

Adam Johnson writes with a suspenseful style. At first he seems disorganized, but farther into the book his cleverness comes out. Not only does his seeming disorganization leave the reader constantly guessing, but it alludes to the state of confusion his characters always experience. This serves as the perfect tool to create a picture of North Korea under Kim Jong Il. A North Korea where children like Pak Jun Do, an orphan, must learn to exchange parts of their humanity for survival. Adam follows Pak Jun Do as his rises in the ranks of the government by kidnapping, imprisonment, impersonation, and even getting willingly bit by a shark. To the reader this book may seem entirely a work of fiction. However, after reading Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick, a great companion to The Orphan Master's Son, they will soon realize how accurate Adam Johnson's North Korea is.

Welcome to North Korea in the 1990's. A place where morality is a luxury and survival is the only goal. LA Times journalist, Barbara Demick gives a very insightful look into the mystery that is North Korea. Using the knowledge she gained as a correspondent in Seoul, South Korea, she follows six defectors: a doctor, a homeless boy, star-crossed lovers, a woman who literally loves Kim Il Sung, and her daughter who hates him. Through those six, Barbara shows us so many contradictions: It is a patriarchal society, yet women become the primary breadwinners; Hatred of capitalism is learned at an early age - however entrepreneurship becomes the difference between life and death; Communism creates a classless society, but North Koreans are denied access to schools, homes, and jobs if they come from a family with a lower status. One of the last totalitarian governments in the modern world, Barbara Demick's real life North Korea rivals Adam Johnson's fictional one.
