The staff members here at McLean & Eakin are self-proclaimed literati, bibliophiles, readers, writers, and--when it really comes down to it--nerds. It could explain why we get so geeked around this time every year when Houghton Mifflin's Best American Series begins trickling in. We hoard them, scavenge volumes for our favorite writers and critics, admire the way they so perfectly take up residence next to those from 2007's collection, cast our votes about editorial selections, and generally do a dance of humble tribute to this annual publishing celebration of the best of the best! We guarentee you and all of your family and friends will find something worthy to dance for too!

And the Award Goes to . . .Last night the 2008 National Book Award Winners were announced to much anticipation and much fanfare. 2008 marks a banner year with the fiction winner going to a new retelling of an old favorite; the nonfiction prize awarded to the first African American female author in the category; and David Handler (aka Lemony Snickett) gave an unprecedented introduction to the Young People's Literature Award.
Congratulations to all the finalists and winners, and click here for a further recap of last night's events.

What Would Bella Do?
If you happened to be one of the Twilight fanatics of the sort of my coworker and I, you've likely seen the movie by now. You also very likely know that a possible answer to the question What would Bella do? is: Bella would purchase books from her local independent bookstore.
In a particular scene in which Bella is researching Quileute legends online, she comes across a few titles that may be helpful. She scrolls right on past the Amazon and Barnes & Noble hits, and instead copies the address of a small bookstore in a nearby town and buys her book locally.
Thanks to Stephenie Meyer and Summit Entertainment for acknowledging the indies, and for bringing all the romance, adventure and mysticism of Twilight to the silver screen!
